Glamping Algarve

The Algarve is the south of Portugal at its most expressive: a coast of golden cliffs pierced by sea caves, beaches tucked between rock formations of an almost surreal beauty, and an interior of hills clad with almond, carob and fig trees. Glamping in the Algarve lets you experience this landscape from accommodation that balances the rusticity of the Portuguese countryside with comforts designed for outdoor living, from luxury tents among orange groves to eco-cabins overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Beyond the tourist beaches, the Algarve conceals an interior of silent sierras, whitewashed villages with ornamental chimneys, and a wild western coast where the Atlantic breaks with force against vertigo-inducing cliffs. The Rota Vicentina, one of the most beautiful coastal trails in Europe, follows this unspoilt shoreline connecting solitary beaches where surfers are the only neighbours.

Sea caves and cliff beaches

The central Algarve coast between Lagos and Albufeira offers a geological spectacle of arches, grottoes and sandstone stacks sculpted by the ocean. The Benagil cave, reached by kayak or swimming, is a natural cathedral with an oculus of light illuminating its interior beach. Praia da Marinha, with its rock pillars rising from turquoise water, is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Boat trips from Lagos reveal dozens of caves along the coast.

Rota Vicentina: hiking the wild coast

The Rota Vicentina is a network of trails running along Portugal's south-western coast, where the Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina Natural Park protects a spectacular shoreline. The Fishermen's Trail, stretching 226 kilometres, follows the cliff edge between beaches accessible only on foot. The Historical Route crosses the interior through cork oak forests and whitewashed villages. Each stage offers different scenery: white-sand beaches, black schist cliffs and bays where only the ocean can be heard.

Cataplana and the cuisine of the sea

The cataplana, a copper pot with a domed lid that gives the dish its name, is the culinary icon of the Algarve. Seafood cataplana combines clams, prawns, langoustines and fish in an aromatic stew of tomato, onion, peppers and coriander. Arroz de lingueirao, grilled June sardines and percebes from the south-west complete an exceptional maritime offering. Beach restaurants with tables on the sand and Atlantic sunsets are the perfect dining room for the Algarve glamper.

The Ria Formosa and its barrier islands

The Ria Formosa is a 60-kilometre lagoon system protected as a natural park, with barrier islands harbouring some of the most beautiful and tranquil beaches in the Algarve. Tavira Island, reached by boat from the charming town of Tavira, offers near-deserted kilometre-long beaches. Deserta Island, facing Faro, lives up to its name. The salt marshes are a habitat for flamingos, seahorses and a rich birdlife. Oysters cultivated in the lagoon are an unmissable local delicacy.

The Algarve serra and the rural interior

The Algarve interior is a world apart from the tourist coast, with sierras covered in cork oaks, chestnuts and cistus that burst into flower in spring. The Serra de Monchique, with its 902-metre Foia peak and millennial hot springs, offers trails with views stretching to the coast. Villages like Alte, Salir and Silves, with its red castle reflected in the Arade river, retain an authenticity that contrasts with the littoral. Medronho, a spirit distilled from strawberry tree berries in copper stills, is the mountain tipple par excellence.

The Algarve serra and the rural interior

Glamping in the Algarve offers the most complete coastal experience in southern Europe, combining spectacular beaches, a generous climate and a seafood cuisine that is a reason to travel in its own right. Portugal's southernmost continental region draws glampers from across Europe for much of the year.

Algarve glamping accommodation benefits from more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and a coastline of exceptional diversity: sandstone cliffs in the Barlavento, lagoons and salt marshes in the Ria Formosa, and wild coast along the Vicentina. The inland sierra offers rural glamping among cork oaks and olive trees.

The Algarve is a mature glamping destination with a growing offering of ecological and sustainable accommodation, particularly on the western coast where development has been more controlled. Cataplana seafood stew, Algarve wines and Portuguese hospitality complete an exceptional experience.
