Glamping Dorset

Dorset is England's Jurassic Coast, a shoreline inscribed as a World Heritage Site where cliffs of multicoloured strata chronicle 185 million years of geological history. Glamping in Dorset lets you wake beside these spectacular landscapes, from the iconic Durdle Door to the shingle beaches of Lulworth Cove, in accommodation ranging from yurts amid meadows to cabins overlooking the English Channel.

Inland Dorset is equally enchanting: rolling hills with chalk figures carved into their slopes, honey-stone villages with thatched roofs, farms producing some of the most admired artisan cheeses in England. Thomas Hardy immortalised these landscapes in his novels, and present-day Dorset preserves the rural English atmosphere he described with such devotion.

The Jurassic Coast and fossil hunting

Dorset's Jurassic Coast exposes 185 million years of history in its stratified cliffs. Charmouth and Lyme Regis are the best spots for finding ammonite fossils, which appear on the beach after winter storms. Mary Anning, the palaeontologist who discovered the first complete ichthyosaur, worked on these shores in the nineteenth century. The Lyme Regis Museum and guided fossil-hunting walks are essential experiences for visitors of all ages.

Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove

Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch jutting into the sea, is one of England's iconic landscape features. A short walk away, Lulworth Cove is an almost perfectly circular bay carved by marine erosion. The coastal path connecting the two offers vertiginous views over multicoloured cliffs. Man O'War Beach, between the two landmarks, is a pebble beach with transparent waters that is perfect for swimming in the summer months.

Dorset villages and thatched cottages

Dorset preserves some of England's most picturesque villages. Shaftesbury, with its famous cobbled Gold Hill and views over the Vale of Blackmore, has been photographed millions of times. Cerne Abbas is home to the chalk giant carved into the hillside, a 55-metre figure whose age is still debated. Corfe Castle, dominated by the ruins of its Norman fortress, looks like a medieval model. Abbotsbury, with its colony of swans and subtropical gardens, rounds off a delightful tour.

Artisan cheeses and Dorset cider

Dorset is a land of extraordinary cheeses. Dorset Blue Vinny, a blue cheese made from skimmed milk that was almost extinct before artisan producers revived it, is a local treasure. The dairy farms of the valleys produce mature cheddars and fresh cheeses sold at farmers' markets in Bridport and Dorchester. Artisan Dorset cider, made from local apple varieties, accompanies the country picnics that are an essential part of glamping life in the region.

Glamping in Dorset offers the ideal combination of spectacular coast, English countryside and unique natural heritage. The Jurassic Coast, running along the Dorset shoreline, is one of the world's most important geological sites and a superb setting for coastal glamping.

Dorset glamping accommodation benefits from a milder climate than much of England, with coastal towns such as Lyme Regis, West Bay and Swanage as bases for exploration. The South West Coast Path, England's longest coastal trail, follows the entire shoreline, offering views that change with every turn.

Dorset is an ideal glamping destination for families and couples seeking nature, history and good food in an accessible setting. Fossil hunting on the beaches, visiting castles like Corfe and sampling fresh seafood are the activities that define the experience.
