Glamping Gelderland

Gelderland is the largest and most wooded province in the Netherlands, a territory that defies the Dutch stereotype of a flat land without end. The Hoge Veluwe National Park, the heather-clad hills and pine forests of the Veluwe, and the Rhine and Waal rivers crossing the south create a landscape of surprising variety. Glamping in Gelderland offers immersion in the most diverse Dutch nature, with accommodation among the trees of the Veluwe, beside lakes, and on rural estates in the Achterhoek.

The Veluwe is the green lung of the Netherlands, an area of more than 1,000 square kilometres where deer, wild boar and mouflon roam freely. The Hoge Veluwe National Park combines nature with the Kroller-Muller Museum, home to the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Glamping in Gelderland is nature, art and regional gastronomy in the heart of the Netherlands.

Hoge Veluwe: nature and Van Gogh

The Hoge Veluwe National Park is a mosaic of woodland, heathland, inland dunes and meadows where red deer, wild boar and mouflon live in freedom. The park offers free white bicycles to explore its 55 square kilometres of trails. Within its bounds, the Kroller-Muller Museum houses 90 paintings and 180 drawings by Van Gogh, alongside a sculpture garden with works by Rodin, Moore and Dubuffet. The combination of nature and art is unique in Europe.

The red deer rut on the Veluwe

Every October, the red deer of the Veluwe stage their rut, a sonic spectacle in which the stags bellow to attract hinds and defend their territory. Rangers organise guided excursions at dawn and dusk to observe this ritual from strategic points. Watching a 200-kilogramme stag with its antlers silhouetted against the autumn forest is an experience that connects you with nature in its rawest state. Nearby glamping sites let you live it with intensity.

Hanseatic towns on the IJssel

The towns of Deventer, Zutphen, Kampen and Doesburg were members of the Hanseatic League and preserve historic centres with medieval warehouses, Gothic churches and cobbled streets evoking the commercial prosperity of the fifteenth century. Deventer hosts the Dickens Festival each December, when the centre is transformed into Victorian England. Zutphen retains the Librije, a chained library from the sixteenth century. These towns make perfect cultural day trips from a Gelderland glamping site.

Cycling and walking on the Veluwe

The Veluwe offers the finest cycling and walking network in the Netherlands, with itineraries crossing pine forests, heathlands that turn purple in August, and inland dunes of white sand. The knooppunten network lets you design bespoke routes by connecting numbered junctions. The Pieterpad, the most famous long-distance trail in the Netherlands, crosses the Veluwe from north to south. Sunsets over the heathlands, with the low light filtering through the pines, are moments of serene beauty.

Cycling and walking on the Veluwe

Glamping in Gelderland offers the most complete natural experience in the Netherlands, with the forests and heathlands of the Veluwe as its principal stage. The country's largest province combines national parks with rivers, historic towns and a growing regional food scene.

Gelderland glamping accommodation benefits from the proximity of the Veluwe, one of the most extensive natural areas in western Europe. Options range from cabins among pines to safari tents on rural estates in the Achterhoek, always surrounded by accessible nature.

Gelderland is an ideal glamping destination for families and couples looking to combine nature with culture. The Kroller-Muller Museum, the Hanseatic towns along the IJssel such as Deventer and Zutphen, and the Appeltern gardens offer varied excursions from any accommodation.
