Glamping Sardinia

Sardinia is a miniature continent in the middle of the Mediterranean, an island where the beaches rival the Caribbean, the Gennargentu mountains guard millennial pastoral traditions, and the prehistoric nuraghi punctuate a landscape of austere, luminous beauty. Glamping in Sardinia lets you inhabit this singular island from accommodation ranging from luxury tents facing the Costa Smeralda to eco-cabins in the mountain interior where shepherds still make pecorino cheese by hand.

Sardinia possesses an identity distinct from the rest of Italy: its own language, an inland cuisine as powerful as its seafood, ancestral festivals with masks harking back to pre-Christian rites, and a sense of time that pauses at noon and does not resume until the sea breeze cools the afternoon. Sardinian glamping is a doorway into this unique island culture.

Dream beaches: La Pelosa, Cala Goloritze, Costa Smeralda

Sardinia boasts some of the most spectacular beaches in the Mediterranean. La Pelosa near Stintino combines white sand with Caribbean-like waters facing the island of Asinara. Cala Goloritze, reachable only on foot or by boat, is an amphitheatre of limestone with a natural arch and transparent water. The Costa Smeralda dazzles with coves among pink granite boulders. Cala Brandinchi, Is Arutas with its quartz sand, and Tuerredda complete a coastline that seems designed for the perfect photograph.

The nuraghi and the mysterious civilisation

Nuraghi are Bronze Age stone towers unique to Sardinia, with more than 7,000 scattered across the island. Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most impressive: a fortified complex revealing an advanced civilisation that flourished between 1900 and 730 BC. The Sacred Well of Santa Cristina, with its perfectly crafted staircase descending to the water table, demonstrates engineering and astronomical knowledge remarkable for the era.

Sardinian gastronomy: from sea to mountain

Sardinian cuisine reflects its coastal and mountainous duality. Porceddu, suckling pig roasted with myrtle, is the celebratory dish par excellence. Bottarga from Cabras, dried grey mullet roe grated over pasta, is a maritime delicacy. Sardinian pecorino, in all its variants from fresh to aged, accompanies pane carasau, the wafer-thin crispy flatbread. Seada, a fried raviolo filled with cheese and drizzled with honey, closes any meal. The wines of Cannonau, said to have antioxidant properties, are reputed to contribute to Sardinian longevity.

The Supramonte and the Gorropu gorge

The Supramonte is a limestone massif in the heart of Sardinia harbouring some of the wildest landscapes in the Mediterranean. The Gorropu gorge, with walls reaching 500 metres, is the deepest canyon in southern Europe. Trails crossing the Supramonte pass through ancient holm oak forests, karst springs and caves with archaeological remains. The villages of Orgosolo, with its murals of social protest, and Oliena, with its Cannonau wines, are ideal bases for exploring this territory.

The Supramonte and the Gorropu gorge

Glamping in Sardinia pairs some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful beaches with a mountainous interior of great character. The island, the second largest in the Mediterranean, offers coastal and inland landscapes of a diversity that surprises.

Sardinian glamping accommodation takes advantage of the natural beauty of the north-eastern coast, the Gallura, with its wind-sculpted granite rocks; the western coast with the Punic ruins of Tharros; and the interior of the Supramonte with its limestone gorges and stone-built villages.

Sardinia is an ideal glamping destination for those seeking first-rate Mediterranean beaches combined with authentic island culture. The season runs from May to October, with September as the ideal month for its mild temperatures, warm sea and fewer visitors.
