Glamping Friesland
Friesland is the most distinctive province in the Netherlands, a land of interconnected lakes, boundless meadows and a culture of its own with an official language, traditional sports and an ancestral relationship with water. Glamping in Friesland offers an experience of stillness and wide horizons, with accommodation beside navigable canals, on centuries-old Frisian farms, or among the breeding fields of the famous Friesian cattle.
The Frisian landscape is one of growing subtlety: clouds reflected in lakes, the sails of skutsjes (traditional barges) crossing the meren, the bell towers of terpen (man-made mounds) rising above the polders. The West Frisian Islands, such as Terschelling and Ameland, reached by ferry, add a coastal dimension of unspoilt beaches and solitary lighthouses to the glamping experience.

Sailing the Frisian lakes
Friesland is the sailing paradise of the Netherlands, with more than 30 lakes connected by canals that allow multi-day voyages without retracing your course. Skutsjes, traditional flat-bottomed sailing boats, are hired for exploring this unique aquatic landscape. The Sneekweek, held in August, is one of the largest inland-water regattas in Europe. Lakeside villages such as Sneek, Heeg and Grou offer berths, restaurants and the chance to combine sailing with glamping.
The West Frisian Islands
Terschelling, Ameland, Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog are islands reached by ferry from the Frisian coast, each with its own personality. Terschelling, the largest, hosts the Oerol festival of theatre and art in natural settings. Ameland offers a historic lighthouse and kilometre-long beaches. Vlieland is car-free, perfect for unplugging. Schiermonnikoog, the smallest, is a national park with beaches where solitude is virtually guaranteed. All offer immense skies and Atlantic sunsets.
Frisian culture: language, sports and traditions
Friesland has its own official language, Frisian, related to Old English and spoken by half a million people. Traditional sports include fierljeppen, vaulting across canals with a pole, and kaatsen, a variant of handball. Villages celebrate patron festivals with markets, music and competitions of these ancestral sports. Frisian identity is strong and visible, from the blue-white-red flags with water lilies to the gastronomy of dairy products and smoked fish.
Elfstedentocht: the eleven-cities route
The Elfstedentocht is the legendary 200-kilometre ice-skating race connecting Friesland's eleven historic towns, held only when the canals freeze sufficiently. Although it has not been raced since 1997, the route can be followed by bicycle or boat during summer, visiting charming towns such as Leeuwarden, the capital, Dokkum, Franeker with its eighteenth-century planetarium, and Bolsward with its Renaissance town hall. It is a cultural traverse through the heart of Friesland.
Glamping in Friesland offers an authentic Dutch experience in the country's most characterful province. The interconnected lakes, the Frisian Islands and the region's own culture create a unique glamping destination.
Frisian glamping accommodation benefits from an extraordinary aquatic landscape: more than 30 navigable lakes connected by canals allow you to explore the province by boat. Frisian farmhouses with their curved roofs and flower-filled gardens provide perfect settings for rural glamping.
Friesland is an ideal glamping destination for lovers of water, sailing and open nature. The Elfstedentocht, the legendary ice-skating race connecting eleven towns, lends its name to a cycling route equally popular in summer. The Frisian Islands offer beaches and tranquillity just a few hours by ferry.
