Glamping Midi-Pyrénées

The Midi-Pyrenees is la France profonde in its purest form: a vast region where the Pyrenees rise as a natural frontier with Spain, where glacial cirques sculpt landscapes of awe-inspiring grandeur, and where rose-stone villages along the Tarn and the Aveyron seem to have crossed the centuries unchanged. Glamping in this region lets you experience the Pyrenean mountains and the Occitan countryside from accommodation that respects local architecture and materials.

From the Cirque de Gavarnie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the secret valleys of the Ariege where brown bears still roam, the Midi-Pyrenees offers glamping on a magnificent natural scale. The starlit nights of the Pic du Midi, the generous south-western cuisine and the village markets where time stands still complete an authentically French experience.

The Cirque de Gavarnie and the central Pyrenees

The Cirque de Gavarnie is a natural amphitheatre of 1,500-metre vertical walls crowned by the highest waterfall in Europe at 423 metres. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is reached by a trail from the village of Gavarnie that climbs through meadows and past cascades. Other Pyrenean cirques such as Troumouse and Estaube complete a landscape trio without equal. In winter, the resorts of Cauterets and Gavarnie-Gedre offer skiing with views of these colossi of rock and ice.

Medieval villages of the Aveyron and the Tarn

The Aveyron and the Tarn preserve villages ranked among the most beautiful in France. Conques, with its Romanesque abbey and the treasures of Sainte-Foy, is a jewel on the Way of Saint James. Cordes-sur-Ciel floats above the clouds from its mountain ridge, with Gothic facades and artisan workshops. Najac descends along a ridge to its fortress. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, perched above the Lot, was the favourite village of Andre Breton. Each deserves an unhurried excursion from the glamping site.

Canoeing the Tarn gorges

The Tarn gorges, carved into the limestone plateau of the Causses, form a canyon up to 500 metres deep through which the river winds between rock walls speckled with caves and cliffside hamlets. The canoe descent from Sainte-Enimie to Le Rozier, roughly 30 kilometres, is one of the finest river experiences in France. The crystal-clear waters allow you to see the bottom at all times, and griffon vultures glide along the canyon's cornices above.

South-western gastronomy: cassoulet and Roquefort

The cuisine of the Midi-Pyrenees is generous and fortifying. The cassoulet of Castelnaudary, a white bean stew with duck confit and sausages, is the stuff of legend. Roquefort, aged in the natural caves of the village that shares its name, is the king of blue cheeses. The black truffle of the Quercy perfumes the winter markets of Lalbenque. The aligot of the Aubrac, a mash of potato and fresh tome cheese stretched to a silky thread, is comfort made dish after a day in the mountains.

South-western gastronomy: cassoulet and Roquefort

Glamping in the Midi-Pyrenees combines high Pyrenean mountains with one of the loveliest countrysides in France. The region offers grandiose landscapes, exceptional medieval heritage and a gastronomy that is a reason to travel in its own right.

Glamping accommodation is distributed between Pyrenean valleys with views of peaks above 3,000 metres, medieval villages such as Conques and Cordes-sur-Ciel, and the Tarn gorges where kayaking and climbing draw sportspeople from across Europe.

The Midi-Pyrenees is an ideal glamping destination for those seeking authenticity, open spaces and a genuine connection with the territory. The Pyrenean national parks and the nature reserves of the Ariege guarantee unspoilt nature, whilst cities like Toulouse, Albi and Cahors offer top-level culture and gastronomy.
