Glamping Marche

The Marche is the Italy that Italians keep for themselves: a region of rolling hills descending gently to the Adriatic, dotted with walled medieval towns, sunflower fields and Verdicchio vineyards. Glamping in the Marche offers the tranquillity of a landscape that resembles a Renaissance painting, with accommodation among stone farmhouses, ancient olive trees, and views stretching to the sea across an endless horizon of hills.

Unlike neighbouring Tuscany, the Marche has remained on the margins of mass tourism, retaining an authenticity you can taste in every family-run trattoria, every village market and every local festival. The Frasassi caves, the Conero Riviera with its white beaches, and the mountains of the Sibillini National Park add variety to a region that deserves to be discovered at an unhurried pace.

Urbino and the Renaissance of Federico da Montefeltro

Urbino, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was one of the most refined Renaissance courts in Italy under Duke Federico da Montefeltro. The Palazzo Ducale, with its studiolo decorated with intarsia of astonishing precision, houses the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche with works by Raphael, Piero della Francesca and Titian. Raphael was born here in 1483 and his birthplace can be visited. The university keeps the city alive with a student energy that animates the cobbled streets.

The Conero Riviera: white beaches on the Adriatic

Monte Conero, a limestone promontory plunging into the Adriatic, creates an exceptional stretch of coast in an otherwise flat region. The beaches of Sirolo, Numana and the Due Sorelle, with their white cliffs above turquoise waters, rival the finest coves in the Mediterranean. Reached by trails through Mediterranean vegetation or by boat, these beaches are a secret the marchigiani share with few. The Conero Park protects this unique shoreline.

Marche wines: Verdicchio and Rosso Conero

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is one of Italy's most underrated whites, a characterful wine with notes of bitter almond and great ageing potential. Its amphora-shaped bottle is unmistakable. Rosso Conero, made from Montepulciano, produces intense and fruity reds beside the coast. Marche wineries offer intimate visits without the queues of Tuscany, with tastings that include ciauscolo, a unique spreadable salami from the region.

The Frasassi caves

The Grotte di Frasassi are one of the most spectacular karst complexes in Europe, with underground chambers of cathedral-like dimensions adorned with stalactites and stalagmites millions of years old. The Sala Grande, the first cavity discovered, could house Milan Cathedral complete with its dome. The tourist route, lasting roughly 75 minutes, passes through chambers with formations that imagination has christened the Niagara, the Giants, and the Hall of Infinity. An essential excursion from any glamping site in the Marche.

The Frasassi caves

Glamping in the Marche offers the essence of rural Italy without the crowds of Tuscany or Umbria. This central Italian region combines hills, Adriatic beaches and Apennine mountains with authentic gastronomy and a notable Renaissance heritage.

Marche glamping accommodation sits among Verdicchio vineyards, wheat fields and olive groves, with panoramic views over a landscape of gentle hills that recalls the backgrounds of Raphael's paintings, the artist having been born in Urbino. The Conero coast offers seaside glamping with beaches of unexpected beauty.

The Marche is an ideal glamping destination for those seeking the most genuine Italy, with more accessible prices, fewer tourists and a quality of life reflected in artisan products, excellent wines and a hospitality rooted in farming tradition.
