Glamping Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc-Roussillon is the lesser-explored French Mediterranean, a region where garrigue perfumed with thyme and rosemary descends to coastal lagoons inhabited by pink flamingos, and where the eastern Pyrenees plunge into the sea creating coastlines of abrupt beauty. Glamping in this region offers an authentic alternative to the crowded Cote d'Azur, with friendlier prices and an unspoilt character it has managed to preserve.

From the vineyards of the Minervois to the Cathar fortresses perched on impossible crags, past the gorges of the Herault and the wild beaches of the Narbonnaise Nature Park, Languedoc-Roussillon unfolds a catalogue of landscapes that surprises with its variety. Glamping here means living the deep French Midi, away from the tourist postcard but with all the luminosity and warmth of the south.

Cathar castles and the story of the Good Men

The Cathar fortresses of the Languedoc are arguably the most spectacular castles in France. Peyrepertuse, Queribus, Montsegur and Puylaurens stand on rocky ridges that look virtually inaccessible, bearing witness to the Albigensian Crusade of the thirteenth century. These ruins, surrounded by garrigue and vineyards, are reached by paths that climb through rock with vertiginous views across the Corbieres. The tragic history of the Cathars, persecuted as heretics, adds an emotional dimension to the visit.

Languedoc vineyards and open-air tastings

The Languedoc is France's largest wine region and has undergone a quality revolution in recent decades. Appellations such as Pic Saint-Loup, Faugeres, Corbieres and Minervois produce complex, aromatic reds at prices that let you discover great wines without breaking the bank. Many growers offer tastings at their estates among the vines, with views of the Mediterranean garrigue. The wine route is a perfect excursion from any glamping site in the region.

The gorges of the Herault and the Pont du Diable

The gorges of the River Herault, near Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert, offer natural pools of emerald water hemmed in by limestone walls. The Pont du Diable, an eleventh-century Romanesque bridge inscribed as a World Heritage Site, crosses the river at a particularly beautiful point. In summer, the rock pools make for the perfect swim after a morning's hike. Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert, one of the most beautiful villages in France, crowns the route with its medieval abbey and cobbled lanes.

Flamingos and coastal lagoons

The Languedoc littoral harbours extensive lagoons separated from the sea by dune barriers. The Etang de Thau, the Narbonnaise lagoon and the etangs of the Petite Camargue are crucial habitats for pink flamingos, herons and avocets. The salt pans of Gruissan create landscapes of striking pink waters. These wetlands are explored by bicycle or on foot along waymarked trails, offering exceptional birdwatching just a few kilometres from the beaches.

Flamingos and coastal lagoons

Glamping in Languedoc-Roussillon combines the French Mediterranean with mountains, vineyards and a fascinating historical heritage. The region, stretching from Montpellier to the Spanish border, offers sun, culture and nature at more accessible prices than Provence or the Cote d'Azur.

Glamping accommodation is scattered among vineyards producing some of the best-value wines in France, aromatic garrigue where essential oils are distilled, and coastal lagoons protected as habitats for migratory birds.

Languedoc-Roussillon is perfect for glamping that blends Mediterranean beach time with excursions to Cathar castles like Peyrepertuse and Queribus, strolls through medieval towns like Carcassonne, and bathing in the gorges of the Herault or the Tarn. All under a sun that shines more than 300 days a year.
