Glamping Mecklenburg-Pomerania

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the hidden jewel of northern Germany, a region of more than 2,000 lakes, primeval forests and a Baltic coastline of chalk cliffs that rival any landscape in Europe. Glamping here takes on a special dimension: floating cabins on silent lakes, tents amid UNESCO-listed ancient beech forests, or lodges with views of the stunning cliffs on the island of Rugen.

This region, the least densely populated in Germany, offers a stillness that is hard to find elsewhere. The cranes that migrate through in their thousands every autumn, the stags that bellow in the Muritz forests and the ospreys soaring over the lakes create a glamping experience where untamed nature is the true protagonist.

The chalk cliffs of Rugen

The Kreidefelsen in Jasmund National Park are chalk cliffs of brilliant white rising up to 118 metres above the Baltic Sea, framed by an ancient beech forest inscribed as a World Heritage Site. The Konigsstuhl, the most famous formation, offers a vertiginous view over turquoise waters. The visitor centre, with architecture integrated into the landscape, explains the site's geology. A coastal trail of several kilometres lets you walk along the cliffs amongst wind-sculpted beech trees.

The Mecklenburg lake district: the land of a thousand lakes

More than 2,000 lakes dot this region, forming the largest lake district in central Europe. The Muritz, covering 117 square kilometres, is the biggest lake lying entirely within German territory. It can be explored by canoe, kayak or sailing boat, overnighting in lakeside cabins or houseboats. Waterway routes link lakes via canals and rivers, allowing multi-day voyages without repeating a single view. Ospreys and grey herons are regular companions.

Autumn crane migration

Every October, tens of thousands of common cranes stop over in the wetlands of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania during their southward migration. The Darss-Zingst peninsula and the island of Rugen are the main observation points. At dusk, the formations of cranes landing in the shallow waters create a breathtaking natural spectacle. Guided excursions with ornithologists allow you to watch these birds from hides without disturbing them.

Spa architecture and Baderarchitektur

The coastal resorts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania preserve a nineteenth-century bathing architecture of singular elegance. Binz, Sellin and Heringsdorf display white villas with bay windows, ornate balconies and long wooden piers stretching out into the Baltic. This style, known as Baderarchitektur, reflects the golden age of German aristocratic seaside resorts. Strolling through these towns at sunset, with the Baltic light gilding the facades, is an experience in itself.

Spa architecture and Baderarchitektur

Glamping in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania lets you discover Germany's most natural and least explored corner. Between the Baltic coast and the Muritz lake district, accommodation is set within landscapes of serene, almost untouched beauty.

The island of Rugen, Germany's largest, boasts the spectacular chalk cliffs of the Jasmund National Park, immortalised by the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. Usedom, shared with Poland, claims the sunniest beaches in the country. Inland, the Muritz National Park protects Germany's largest lake alongside forests where species reintroduction has restored biodiversity.

Glamping in this region is ideal for lovers of nature and silence, with options ranging from houseboats on the Seenplatte lakes to eco-lodges among the beeches of Jasmund.
